The Mobile World Congress (MWC) is the essential gathering for leaders in the mobile industry. The MWC Conference 2024 was held in Barcelona from February 26 to 28, 2024, bringing together policymakers and global leaders from the mobile industry and related sectors to collaborate on building a digital future that supports the development of digital nations.
A Djiboutian delegation representing the Ministry of Communication in charge of Posts and Telecommunications (MC-PT), the Multisectoral Regulatory Authority of Djibouti (ARMD), and the operator Djibouti Telecom traveled to Barcelona, Spain, to contribute to debates on topics such as the expansion of 5G, artificial intelligence, digital inclusion, and climate action, which represent just a few of the common challenges faced by participating countries.
A workshop on the theme of "Monitoring the Achievement of Digital Nations in Africa" was organized alongside the Ministerial Program of the MWC Barcelona to discuss the establishment of a Digital Nations Index and a Regulatory Index for Africa. These indicators are intended to assist political and economic decision-makers in their deliberations regarding the development of digital nations in Africa. Initially, these indices will be piloted in 8 African states before being expanded across the entire continent.
This work is being carried out by the GSMA in collaboration with the Francophone Telecommunications Regulation Network (FRATEL), of which ARMD has been a member since late 2023. This network brings together telecommunications market regulators from French-speaking countries. The primary purpose of this network is to establish and develop collaboration among francophone regulatory bodies. For the year 2023, the network's discussions focused on the theme of consumer satisfaction.
ARMD's participation in such international events contributes to the development of the Authority's expertise and its international standing, while also supporting Djibouti's national policy for the telecommunications sector.
